Hidden Costs When You Move on Your Own

Moving to a new house can be an exciting time filled with opportunities and happiness, but it can also be a difficult and potentially confusing one. There is lots to plan for, many variables to consider, and a lot of choices to make. One of these choices is whether or not to hire movers.

Financial Costs

One of the main reasons why many people choose to move on their own is they want to save money. This is understandable.

However, it’s often not the case. There are many costs associated with moving on your own that you may not have considered. To start, you’ll need to rent a truck. You may also need to buy or rent equipment to help you move. This typically means dollies, carts, protective blankets, straps, and much more.

You’ll also need packing tools, such as boxes, tape, plastic wrap, and much more. None of these individual items are especially costly on their own, but the amounts can add up quickly.

You also don’t have any insurance coverage if you move yourself. Therefore, if you damage anything (your belongings, any property, common areas of a building, etc.) you will be responsible for paying any associated costs out of pocket.

Speaking of breaking or damaging items, if you don’t have the right equipment or enough help when you’re moving, there’s a chance that you could drop or otherwise damage your belongings. You may think you’re saving money by not hiring movers, but those potential savings will disappear very quickly if you accidentally smash your television when you’re taking it off the truck.

However, in addition to the financial costs of moving home yourself, there are many other aspects to keep in mind as well.

Stress

Moving can be stressful. Even if you are very organized, have a detailed house moving checklist and plan, and give yourself plenty of time to get everything done, it can still be a difficult process that can raise your anxiety levels and leave you feeling on edge. You can save yourself and your family this stress and the potential arguments that could arise from it by working with professionals.

Safety

There are many potential safety issues when you’re moving on your own. The first is that heavy boxes or furniture can cause serious injury. If you’re not lifting properly and you don’t have enough people to help, it’s very easy to suffer a back injury, knee injury, or other injury that can potentially cause long-term problems.

You could also potentially injure yourself if you’re not using the right tools and equipment when you’re moving. For instance, if you drop a box or heavy item, you could possibly break a finger or toe if you’re not wearing proper gloves and footwear.

Finally, the safety of your possessions could be at risk as well. While your belongings are clearly less important than yourself and your loved ones, you still don’t want to see them get broken or damaged. Unfortunately, your items could be dropped, banged, or otherwise damaged if you don’t have enough help or if you’re not using proper equipment and techniques.

Quality

It’s almost impossible to talk about the hidden costs of moving without discussing the differences in quality between a move you do yourself and working with professionals. When you’re moving on your own, your move will likely take longer, be less organized, and your belongings have a greater chance of being misplaced or damaged.

To avoid these issues, you’ll want to work with a team of trusted professionals. Your home, your belongings, and your family are too important to leave to just anyone.
